Te Puia, is home to the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, Pōhutu Geyser, as well as the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute – training the next generation of artists from around the country. Pohutu means "big splash" or "explosion". "Geyser" refers to a hot spring in which water intermittently boils, sending a tall column of water and steam into the air.
